1. Preparing for Installation
Tools and Materials Needed
The basic tools required to install a damper include:
Driver for the sheet metal screws
Sheet metal screws
Drill
Measuring tape
Permanent marker
Duct sealant
Tin snips
Before beginning, ensure the damper is the correct size for the ductwork, and double-check measurements. Remove any external insulation from the duct, and have all tools ready for a smooth installation.
It is important to assess the ductwork to locate the appropriate placing. Pay attention to airflow direction and mark an arrow on the ductwork as a reminder if needed. When determining the best spot for the damper, keep in mind future access to the damper and the role of the damper in the system (balancing, regulating, or fire safety). Avoid areas with tight clearances or difficult access.
Removing the Extended Shaft
Carefully remove the extended shaft from the damper, keeping it aside for later reattachment.
Measuring Key Distances
Accurate measurements are critical here. Be sure to measure twice and cut once. Measure the dimensions of the damper and make sure that it fits the duct opening.
Measure from the bottom of the damper to the center of the appropriate axle.
Next measure up from the bottom to locate where the extended shaft will be positioned.
Locate the area in the duct where the damper is to be placed.
2. Preparing the Duct for Installation
Marking and Drilling Holes
Wear gloves during this step because sheet metal can be very sharp. Remove any burrs after cutting the sheet metal.
Use a permanent marker to mark where holes need to be drilled.
Drill a minimum of 1 ⅛” (29) Dia. hole in the duct.
Carefully drill the duct, ensuring edges are smooth and clean to prevent air leaks.
3. Positioning the Damper in the Duct
Inserting the Damper
Slide the damper into the ductwork. Ensure the damper axle is lined up to the hole in the duct.
Position the damper correctly within the duct to ensure it aligns with the system’s airflow needs.
Securing the Damper
Attach the damper securely using a minimum of 2 screws per side. Spaced a maximum of 12” (305) C-C. Be aware and do not place a screw into the damper linkage.
Snap the extended shaft on the damper axle.
Slide the bracket over the extended shaft and screw it into place.
Slide the extended shaft onto the drive axle.
Slide the spacer over the extended shaft.
Slide the stand-off bracket over the extended shaft and secure into place with 2-screws.
4. Finalizing the Installation
Caulking the Damper into the Sleeve
Arguably the most important step is sealing the ductwork. Sealing the edges around the damper to prevent air leaks and maintain system efficiency is critical and can also prevent costly moisture issues down the road.
Caulk the damper into the sleeve around the edges.
Apply high-quality duct sealant to ensure a tight, durable fit that prevents moisture and airflow issues.
5. Testing and Final Adjustments
Now it’s time to test your handiwork. Manually operate the damper to make sure that it opens and closes properly. Check to verify that everything is working properly before packing up your tools. For balancing and regulating dampers, it is important that the damper operates smoothly for fine-tuning adjustments. Backdraft dampers should be checked to make sure that they close properly when airflow is stopped.
Make any necessary adjustments to ensure the damper is correctly positioned for the specific HVAC needs of the space. Regular inspections are recommended to maintain the damper’s functionality over time.
